malcolm declines when the ship’s captain asks him if he would like to return to lilycove city. moored on a walkway on the shores outside mossdeep, he makes a request.

“i’ve another place to stop.” a map toward the cave north of the city is open on his pokétech. they sail the yacht past rocks, shallows, and anchor still some distance from the cave. as malcolm climbs down, he’s asked by a crew member whether he would like take a boat there.

instead, froslass leads. the waves are calmer today, and with the precipitation in the air a path freezes beneath malcolm’s shoes and ahead of him. it is high tide and there is little sand at the entrance. each crash of the water against the shore climbs the sand steadily to spill into the cave’s mouth. malcolm looks into darkness.

there is no crumbling ceiling. the stone here is jagged but unmarked. malcolm reminds himself this as he enters. lorna follows.

the sand is soaked enough to shift around each step he makes. where the water is raised too high, the froslass freezes a path across the water. malcolm is looking for something.

the desperate splash of water echoes through the cavern. lorna catches malcolm's eyes and, at a nod, begins to split her path away from the staircase toward the noise.

not too far away, an alolan sandshrew struggles against a cliff face. its paws fail to gain traction of the wall and each time it moves, its feet and tail dip into the growing water of high tide. in its desperation, it does not notice the trainer and his froslass. its focus is only on avoiding getting swept away by the waves and current.

malcolm’s sigh is laboured, deep, and he murmurs instruction to lorna. as a wave crashes in, the froslass casts a blizzard and the water freezes. the sandslash finds better purchase on jagged ice than smooth rock and can finally climb to the top. it scampers deeper into the cave, not even looking back to its saviours.

it matters not. malcolm continues.

there’s a crash of water and ice fractures under malcolm’s feet. a sealeo body slams the ice and, as malcolm slides across ice, the sheet breaks. he reaches wet stone rather than water, landing firmly but roughly on a level the water couldn’t quite reach. the sheet breaks underneath seal’s belly and it drops back into the water again. when it emerges at the surface, it’s– it’s laughing, clapping its fins together before a frigid cold sets in.

blizzard.

the cold affects lorna little. she braves it, before drawing on the darkness of a cavern. it gathers between her arms before she lets a shadow ball lose. it hits against sealed and, before it has a chance to recover, lorna bends down to deliver a draining kiss. drained, the sealeo attempts to retaliate, an aurora beam sailing through the cave, but lorna delivers another on its other cheek. weak, the sealeo is swept away by the current.

malcolm brushes frost off his suit jacket. breathing into his hands to warm them up, he misses apollo. instead, he lets out his wigglytuff, and while kenzie shivers she waddles close to him. they’re deeper in the cave now. one has to be close.

a fog descends. the air is wet, cloying, and malcolm shivers. kenzie is comically shuddering as her wigglytuff arms struggling to hug around herself for warmth. her cheeks are puffed in defiance as lorna floats unaffected next to her.

malcolm thinks he sees one. precarious on an outcrop of rocks, there’s the pale glint of something more delicate, but the dense fog makes it hard to determine the glimmer.

the mist is strong. an amaura protects the outcrop of rocks, warily watching malcolm walk. lorna moves into action. his froslass moves in and casts another shadow ball but it meets a light screen before it hits the amaura and the attack is slowed. darkness sheds off the balls shape and its power is smothered before it meets the amaura’s side.

malcolm’s eyes glimmer over the fossil pokemon. it is precious. a relic roaming the cave in modern day. lorna lobs another shadow ball and it unravels beneath the wall. she’s about to move in for a kiss–

the cavern is filled with the gentle sounds of a wigglytuff’s song. even shaking kenzie can sing and her gentle notes begin to soothe the defiant amaura. steadily, its eyes slide shut and it nods off against the outcrop. wigglytuff eyes the froslass. she won this time.

malcolm can approach the prize. on the outcrop it was protecting there is a shoal shell. as the mist fades he can run a thumb over its fragile shell. the ridges are smooth, the white has a lustre so rare. malcolm breathes out. he wipes away the last grains of sand before he pockets it.

taking out a pokeball, he tosses it at the dozing amaura. malcolm will have two treasures today.
